Did you find an injured or orphaned animal? Use the information below to help.
sometimes an animal may appear to need help but actually it is behaving normally. Please don’t kidnap a baby animal without checking with a rehabber first.
Baby birds can be hatchlings, nestlings or fledglings. Fledglings are frequently found on the ground unable to fly. People think they need help but the parents are near bringing them food, protecting them and coaxing them to learn to fly. These babies do not need our help unless they are injured or in danger. Check out the file below to help you figure out if you need the help of a rehabber.

If something happens to a mother squirrel her babies will leave the nest when they get hungry even if their eyes are still closed. Baby opossums found alone need to come into rehab. Their mother does not know she lost one of her babies and will not be back to look for it. Baby rabbits and fawns are special cases so there is more information below.

She is only on the nest for a few minutes so you may not even know she was there. If you find a nest of cottontails you can determine if mom is still feeding the babies by placing string over the nest in a tic-tac-toe pattern. When she returns she will disturb the string. If she has not returned overnight you will need to contact a rehabber. Cottontails also are very small when they are ready to be on their own. If their eyes are open, ears are upright and they are about the size of an apple they are ready to be on their own. They will spend a few days around the nest before dispersing.
White tail deer mothers protect their newborn babies by leaving them alone. This is the reason so many of them are kidnapped by well meaning people. White tail deer mothers protect their newborn babies by leaving them alone. This is the reason so many of them are kidnapped by well meaning people. The spots on the fawn help to camouflage the baby and the fact that they have no scent means predators have a hard time finding them. Mother comes every few hours to feed the baby and will leave them in the same place for a day or two. They will move the baby every couple of days and the baby will remain still to hide from predators. Once the fawn is old enough to run and keep up with mom you will see them together. Any fawn that is not injured should be left alone and observed. If the fawn is injured or showing signs of distress contact a rehabber for help.
Mother ducks make their nest in the oddest places. Many times they lay eggs nowhere near water. When the eggs hatch, the mother will gather her brood and walk them to the nearest water. Occasionally a baby or two will get lost along the way. Any lone baby duck or goose needs to come into rehab.
